A July Fourth celebration in downtown Bedford has raised $3,000 for the National D-Day Memorial Foundation.

More than 1,500 people who attended LibertyFest, a music and food festival at the Bedford farmer's market, contributed the funds, said Scott Smith, director of Bedford Main Street, which organized the celebration.

The evening concluded with fireworks launched from Burks Hill, where the memorial sits.

Smith, who will present a check this morning to a representative of the D-Day foundation on the grounds of the memorial, said, "The community is 100 percent behind this memorial."

The memorial foundation is $5 million in debt to the contractors and architect who built the $25 million memorial.

Last month, Richard Burrow, the foundation's former director, was indicted on federal fraud charges that a federal prosecutor has said is related to the debt. Burrow has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
