Conversations with World War I veterans in Southwest Virginia

It was 79 years ago. Armistice Day. The end of the Great War, or what would become known as World War I. These men were in their late teens and 20s, from different walks of life, veterans with their whole lives ahead of them.

They became railroad workers and farmers, teachers and miners -- all sharing a strong faith in God. All with long life lines.

Today, these 17 men living in Western Virginia are among the last 5,000 veterans in this country who can remember that first Armistice Day in 1918.

Staff photographer Eric Brady spent the past two months documenting these veterans in photographs and in tape recordings.
